Morning my friends,
I have a debit card that I only use on two websites - amazon and paypal - I do not even use this card in the shops. Recently my card details were swiped and some plane tickets and other silly things were purchased on my card.
The bank gave me my money back and that was all fine, however it makes me think - how could my details get stolen from anywhere other than those places I have used it.. which means maybe an inside man at those places?
hmmmm

ummm...... Did you receive any E-mails from amazon.com or paypal that requested you to update an account or anything similar, perhaps you clicked on a key logger link or something, that's the only thing I could think of off the top.....?? but who knows....

Thank you for replying to me Ryan.
No I'm quite good with spotting fakes - and also don't ever click links before checking them for funny symbols and so forth. So I have no idea where it happened. though i really did not get stung by a pshish.

Good day to all of you...
No way do I believe that paypal AND/OR amazon could get hacked - though yes an insider is a possilty. Hmm a tricky one you see - who to believe.
Of course if there was an insider and they got shopped, it be all over the world wide news - it be a a large step back in what has been some excellent development in improving online checkout confidence.
Thats my 2 cents yo

I have had my eBay account hacked into, and they own PayPal, so it makes me wonder. I still use PayPal all the time, but that seems a little sketchy. Just be careful. I am glad that you were able to get your money back!

I am positive that it wasn't a matter of amazon or paypal getting hacked. There are a variety of different ways that your information could have been taken though. MY bet would be that it was taken from someone that works at the companies. I don't think that every employee is going to be perfectly honest. It could also be a case of someone being careless with your credit card information, however bad that might sound.

I remember hearing of something similar to this happening with some other site... I just wish I could remember more about it. I think in that case it ended up being someone that had somehow gotten access to the card number from somewhere offline. Again, I wish I could remember more details.

It's good that your bank returned your money without problems. It's scary to think of how easy it is to have your information used by someone whom you didn't authorize to use it.

Wow, how strange is that. It is scary to think that someone could do this so easily. Never give out info from something you get in an email.Just to risky.

There are the replica of the same website .. sometimes what happens is that you are redirected to a site which looks exactly the same but its a fake one .. how you come to know about this is you have to check the address bar .. and the website address would be different than what you had entered .... this is done using some kind of a virus which is in your system and the only work this virus has is to do id redirect you to other similiar looking websites ( there was a scam which had happened earlier with hotmail.com i suppose )

Just wanted to ask you when you start your computer ... do you see or feel any unusual activity happening like some one is taking a snap shot of your computer screen or something like that or your monitor blinks .. and can you let me know which system are you using .. i am asking all this because i have already done this before and i was successful in eradicating the whole thing .. do you suspect any virus on your computer which is not getting deleted with the help of your anti virus and windows firewall

I have had a lot of problems with PayPal and getting my account hacked by someone who then stole credit card information to purchase things (and not even through PayPal). Somehow my social security number was also involved, though it's posted nowhere in my information. I know it's not anything I clicked and that my system is not compromised -- I don't ever open emails claiming to be from PayPal or anyone I don't know and I have massive firewalls, etc. in place because one of my major projects is computer consulting related and I have to have very sophisticated controls in place on all my computers to do my job properly and protect myself. I also do very little business involving sensitive information online and definitely don't use my credit cards online.
So, I totally think that PayPal is not as secure as it should be (aka, is really easy for people to break into that are trying) and agree that something must be fishy. Yes, they've been helpful and have reversed everything that has happened, but it's still incredibly annoying and a waste of time to have to keep up with it!
